Pixar's Tribute to Former CEO, Steve Jobs

The picture above from the official Pixar Web site (http://www.pixar.com/) says it all.  Not only would Steve Jobs be missed for his great accomplishments in technology, but also for his contributions in Pixar.

Again, thanks Steve!

Steve Jobs, you'll be missed!

I can't believe how truly sad I am when I learned that Steve Jobs had passed away.  Steve was one of my inspirations when I took on an IT career.  As kids, we were all amazed on how Jobs and Wozniak assembled a personal computer in their garage.  For wide-eyed geeky kids like us, those were the stuff of legends and we dreamed of someday being like them.

Steve Jobs is a true visionary in its purest form.  The products he designed are original, functional and very aesthetically-pleasing.  Even though I have not had the pleasure of owning a Mac,  I know that it is the best platform for personal computing.  I cherish my iPod nano since it changed the way I listen to my music.  I love my iPod touch since it enabled me to take my computer on the go, much more so than the laptop.  And someday I plan to have the latest iPhone and the iPad.

I'm sad that Steve Jobs passed away.  I'm sad that the world would miss all the wonderful products that could have been designed by Steve.  With his passing, at least I'm still comforted with the thought that Steve's legacy would go on through the products that he designed and the people that he have inspired.

Steve Jobs, thank you so much and you'll be greatly missed! :(

Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol Teaser Poster

I'm really looking forward to this latest installment in the M:I franchise and I have a feeling that this would be the best among the four movies.  The first was kinda hard to understand, the second had great action courtesy of John Woo while the third had a great villain in Philip Seymour Hoffman.  This poster depicts a very serious Ethan Hunt in a hoodie with a don't-mess-with-me look.  Here's a bit of trivia.  Tom Cruise also donned a hoodie towards the end of Minority Report, which is a great SF film and a personal favorite of mine.

The signature fuse near the bottom is a very nice touch.  All that's missing is the theme song.  For me, it's the perfect teaser poster -- whetting up our appetite for the upcoming movie.  I think the only thing that I don't like is the subtitle, Ghost Protocol.  It sounds too video gamey for me.  But that's just me.

Superman/Batman Pencils by Jim Lee

I'm a big admirer of Jim Lee and I've been following him on Twitter.  If you haven't been following @JimLee, then you better follow him now and you will be rewarded by impressive pencils like the one below:

Street Fighter X Tekken Official Box Art

Capcom sure loves us geeks! Here is the official box art for the upcoming Street Fighter X Tekken.  I'm a big fan of these two fighting franchises and I've been waiting for a long time for them to cross paths.  One year is still a long wait for the release of this sure to be blockbuster hit, but for now I'll be satisfied with these screenshots.

Ryu vs. Kazuya! Chun-Li vs. Nina!
Does Cammy have a chance against Kuma?
Hey Hugo stop beating King, my favorite!!!

iPad + Atari Joystick = Pure AWESOMENESS!

After seeing this upcoming product from Atari, nostalgia comes rushing in.  I remember the good old days when   Atari was king and graphics were simple yet gameplay was addictive and fun. The only thing missing would be the slot where you insert your coins.

Laurence Fishburne - Goodbye CSI, Hello Daily Planet!

That's right Laurence Fishburne will soon play Perry White, the editor-in-chief of the Daily Planet in the Superman  reboot, Man of Steel.  Casting for the Man of Steel has been solid thus far, with Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as the Jonathan and Martha Kent and  Russell Crowe and Julia Ormond as Jor-El and Lara, respectively.  We'll just have to wait and see if Zack Snyder's vision for this reboot would finally deliver a Superman movie worthy of the name.

Unimpressive Bane Costume for The Dark Knight Rises

After seeing the recently released photographs of Batman vs. Bane in action, I was underwhelmed.  Bane looks like a shadow of his comic self.  Bane here looks like a generic commando thug:

Though I won't go so far as to declare that the Bane incarnation in the laughable Batman and Robin movie was better, at least they, somehow, got the costume right.  Well, somehow...

I want my Bane to be meaner and ferocious looking like the one below from the comics:

Or the Bane from the excellent Arkham Asylum game:

But as they say with all things Dark Knight related, we would just have to put our trust on Nolan!

Syfy's Alphas: A Superhero Show Grounded in Reality!

I've gotta admit that when I watched the Season Premiere of Alphas, I was a little skeptical.  Here I was watching and thinking to myself that here goes another superhero show of heroes without costumes and another potential Heroes copycat.  But at the end I'm equally thrilled and intrigued and already looking forward to the next episode.

Nina Theroux
Written by Zak Penn of The Incredible Hulk and X-Men sequels fame, Alphas is the story of a small group with superhuman abilities.  Each of the five members have their own special unique abilities.  Malik Yoba is Bill Harken, an FBI agent with superhuman which unfortunately lasts for only 5 minutes at a time.  Ryan Cartwright (of Bones fame) plays Gary Bell, an autistic which can view and interact with wireless communications out of thin air.  Azita Ghanizada is Rachel Pirzad, she has the ability to enhance the five senses with the drawback that while one of the senses is super-enhanced, the other four will shut down.  Nina Theroux is played by Laura Mennell, an individual who can "push" people to temporarily do what she asks them to do, a Jedi mind trick if you will.  Warren Christie plays Cameron Hicks which for me has the most interesting superability from the team.  Hicks has hyperkinesis which allows him to "predict trajectory by eye sight making him not just a superhuman perfect shot with projectiles, but also, allows him react to the trajectory of objects already in motion (e.g. dodge bullets or trip a man who is running in the right spot to cause him to fall in a specific position)." Lastly, the great all-around character actor David Strathairn plays Dr. Lee Rosen, the Professor X but way more likeable, of the team. (from Wikipedia)

Cameron Hicks
I'm not so fond of Episode 2, which is about an Alpha which can superhumanly control Cause & Effect.  It was OK but predictable.  The third episode, Anger Management, is the one that made a fan out of me.  The team is now looking for an Alpha which can release pheromones in the air causing people to riot and to fight each other to the finish.  The episode is unique, intense and very entertaining.  For all the doubters, just watch Episode 3 and you'll not regret it.  It's like watching a very good X-Men story that is grounded in reality.  And I don't think the X-Men have encountered these sorts of mutant powers themselves, too.

I'm really excited on where Zak Penn & crew would take our favorite Alphas and I am sure that I would be there with them as they make their journey.

Just the bags alone for this year's Comic-Con is worth the price of admission.  Maybe someone will sell one of these on eBay and I might get myself one :)

San Diego Comic-Con International 2011

First of all, I'm really bummed out that I'm so, so far away and could not attend the biggest geek event of them all -- the Comic-Con!  So I'll just have to attend there vicariously through the different posts and updates from my favorite geek sites.

Have a great weekend to everyone, especially those who are attending!

Riddick Concept Art

After seeing Pitch Black I became a Vin Diesel fan instantly.  It's because of his Riddick character that made Pitch Black one of the best SF movies ever.  The Chronicles of Riddick was OK but it didn't outdo Pitch Black.  So seeing this Riddick concept art made me excited all over again.  Vin Diesel shared this concept art via his facebook page and Vin said that director David Twohy gave this to him as a present.  So the only question now is when will they start producing Riddick and how long are we going to wait?  Hopefully not too long.

2012 Chevy Camaro Transformers Special Edition

For those of you who have been dreaming of having your very own Bumblebee, this is your chance!  Chevy is releasing a 2012 Camaro Transformers Special Edition, albeit the non-transforming variety.  For only $31,650 and up, you can have all these (as stated in the official site):
Offered on the top two trim levels — 2LT and 2SS — with the RS Appearance Package, the 2012 Transformers edition only improves upon the already immensely popular 2010 Transformers Special Edition. The 2012 Transformers look starts with a stripe design consistent with the actual Transformers: Dark of the Moon Bumblebee model: Rally Yellow exterior paint with exclusive carbon-fiber weave rally stripes that travel on each side of the hood bulge, upper horizontal front fascia surface, roof, decklid and spoiler. The Autobot® shield is incorporated throughout the design, including on the center caps of the 20" black-painted wheels(2) and embroidered into the headrests.
Sounds good, isn't it?  Me, I'm considering to get one once they've incorporated the transforming feature :)

Latest Shot of Karl Urban as Judge Dredd

There are just some movies that you would rather forget.  Sylvester Stallone's Judge Dredd falls into this category.     This is sad since Judge Dredd is one of the great comics characters that deserved a better movie treatment.  Fortunately, a new version of a Judge Dredd movie is on the way, called simply Dredd.

Starring Karl Urban, a geek-friendly actor who starred as Bones McCoy in the latest Star Trek incarnation, Eomer in the LOTR Trilogy, John Grimm in Doom, Vaako in The Chronicles of Riddick, Ghost in Pathfinder and William Cooper in R.E.D.  Hopefully, this new adaptation would be enough to rid of the bad taste brought about by Stallone's earlier version.

An iPhone case with a slide out bottle opener? Check!

This has got to be one of the most simple yet unique products that I've ever seen --  an iPhone protective case with a slide out bottle opener.  Very handy for those out of towns and backyard parties since you never really know when you'll need a bottle opener.  Now, is there also an Android version in the works?

Awesome Justice League Pencils by Jim Lee

Justice League has been one of my favorites since I was a kid so the upcoming relaunch of JLA by one of my favorite artists, Jim Lee, has got me so excited.  Check out this awesome pencil work from Jim Lee's official Twitter account.

Emmy Snubs Sean Bean for Eddard Stark Role

I can't believe that Sean Bean has been robbed of an Emmy Nomination for this year's award.  Given the finale of Season 1, this would have been his only chance to be nominated and he still didn't get it.  Game of Thrones is one of the single best fantasy series in years and Sean Bean's exceptional performance as Eddard Stark of Winterfell is one of the reasons why.  And I thought that his nomination is already a shoo-in. I just can't express my disappointment with the Academy for snubbing Sean Bean! Winter is surely coming...

Batman: Year One Trailer

This September prepare to go back in time and watch The Dark Knight's early years as Warner Premiere presents an animated take on Batman: Year One based on the critically-acclaimed work by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli.  This is shaping up to be one of DC's best animated work since Batman: Under the Red Hood and the Superman/Batman series.

The Amazing Spider-Man Close-Up

Hmmm... Somehow I'm not feeling this new version of the Spidey costume.  It looks like a dirty basketball and there's something odd with the shape.  I definitely like the Tobey Maguire version better.  And you can see through the eyes.  I like the old Spidey eyes from the old costume.  Anyway, I'm still opposed to Spider-Man being rebooted.  Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi had a great run and they should just have continued with the original cast.  Oh well, that's Hollywood for you -- where everyone feels that they just have to reboot all our beloved franchises.

What do you guys think about this new costume?

A Space Invaders watch, anyone?

Just in time for the recently announced Space Invaders movie, this Space Invaders watch is not just your ordinary average watch.  This watch is brought to you by high-end watchmaker RJ Romain Jerome.

From the official site:
RJ-Romain Jerome, in connivance with TAITO Corporation (TAITO) is becoming an accomplice of this incursion by agreeing to create two 78-piece limited series in honour of these SPACE INVADERS. Reality at last surpasses fiction.

Ted Danson will replace Laurence Fishburne on CSI

I'm sad to hear that Laurence Fishburne will leave CSI since I've grown accustomed to his character, Ray Langston. But I'm happy to learn that Ted Danson will be his replacement.  I'm a big fan of Ted Danson in his role as Arthur Frobisher on FX's Damages so I know that he will be a great addition to the cast of one of my favorite shows.

CSI will be back for its 12th season on Sept. 21st.
